Five collegians steal Pune bus for joyride

The youths were driving the bus for about two hours before it rammed into an electricity pole in Mayur Colony on Karve Road.

The Kothrud police on Sunday arrested five youths for allegedly stealing a bus belonging to the Pune Mahamandal Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) for a joyride in the wee hours of Sunday. They were later released by a city court on bail.

The youths were driving the bus for about two hours before it rammed into an electricity pole in Mayur Colony on Karve Road.

They were nabbed by the Kothrud police at Jai Bhavaninagar on Paud Road.

The youths have been identified as Pradeep Bappu Gade, 23, of Shastrinagar, Omkar Kengale, 18, Hrishikesh Bodke, 23, Sagar Jadhav, 21, all residents of Kothrud, and Pranit Chavan, 20, of Gujarat Colony. Gade was driving the bus.

They allegedly stole the bus, valued at Rs7 lakh, parked outside the Kothrud bus depot early on Sunday. A police patrol, including head constable Ashok Mahadik, spotted the bus being driven rashly. They suspected foul play and intercepted it in Jai Bhavaninagar at 2.15am.

The police said the youths, all college students, celebrated Chavan’s birthday on Saturday night and wanted to go for a joyride. They went to the Kothrud bus depot and stole the bus.

Hospital clerk arrested
The anti corruption bureau (ACB) officials on Monday afternoon arrested Ashok Shrirang mane, a senior clerk in Sassoon General Hospital, for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his jnown sources on income. Mane initally worked in the office of the dean of the hospital since November 10, 1977. His total income from 1977 to 2004 stood at Rs29.82 lakh and that from 2005 to 2008 was Rs25.75 lakh.

Two held for pirating CDs
The crime branch (unit I) arrested two suspects, including the owner of a shop, for allegedly selling pirated and pornographic compact discs (CDs) on Laxmi road on April 30 and also seized MP3, CDs, DVDs and pornographic CDs, valued at 23.86 lakh  from them. Police identified the accused owner as Zahir Abdul Shaikh (37), a resident of Budhwar Peth, and his servant Gopi Rasikpal Thakur (20), a resident of Lohiyanagar.
