BlackBerry phones, considered to be the most secure operating system in smart phones, are now being targeted by a new  virus, Zeus Trojan,  which has been specifically designed to target the BlackBerry software.

After smart phones with operating systems like Symbian and Windows were attacked by Trojan viruses launched by cyber criminals to steal confidential information of users, the latest target has been BlackBerry.

According to a report by e-security firm Trend Micro, this Zeus Trojan does not display any graphical user interface (GUI) that can prompt users about the infection. Instead, it removes itself from the list of applications. After successful installation it sends a message to the administrator to alert that it is ready to receive commands. It sends a message saying “App Installed OK”.

It can come through an SMS or even with downloaders attached in an email which are sent several times to various users forcing them to download. After this the Trojan can view, delete and forward SMS, block calls, change the administrator on the device and block phone numbers on the phone.

The Trojan allows the cyber criminals to change the telephone number the device that sends all the data to in the event that it gets shut down. The aim of the Zeus Trojan on smart phones is to monitor users’ private information and in particular when they conduct mobile online banking.

“As more users access internet from expanding pool of devices, web based threats will continue in size. The growth of smart phones and faster data speeds will also increase the possibilities of infection. As criminals devise ways to make money out of exploiting mobile technologies, mobile users will grow extremely vulnerable,” commented Amit Nath Country Manager India and SAARC Trend Micro.

He further added, “With the growing diversity of operating systems among companies, as well as the growing use of mobile devices, cyber criminals should have a very profitable 2011. Their tactic will be to put a new spin on social engineering by way of malware campaigns, by bombarding recipients with emails that drop downloaders containing malware. All this will largely be made possible because of the Internet.”
