Blaming NCP president Sharad Pawar and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar for systematically weakening the Congress, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre hinted that the party will contest the next assembly elections alone.

“In every assembly constituency across the state, we will begin the process of short listing candidates for the next assembly polls. At the MPCC meeting, the tempers were very high against the NCP,” Thakre said.

“Even in the local bodies elections where I sensed the NCP was working against us in a few seats.  I personally talked to Union minister for agriculture Sharad Pawar. He assured me that he would take up the matter with deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and state NCP chief Madhukar Picchad. Later, it came to light that he was in know of all that was happening in the party,” Thakre added.

Senior party leader Anant Gadgil was outspoken when he said the Congress will have to do some introspection to set its own house in order. The NCP is getting ahead of the Congress because loyalists in the party are being sidelined. The electoral reservation policy has adversely affected the Congress consolidating the regional forces. Several Congress leaders were unanimous in stating that NCP ministers always gave more preference to their party members when it came to getting their work done in their respective regions or constituencies, whereas Congress ministers were indifferent to party workers. Even the chief minister has taken no initiative for the party leaders. He has not even filled up the posts of mahamandals (corporations).

A Congress minister said, “Almost 70% of the funds allocated for the irrigation sector has been cornered by the NCP constituents causing much heart burn among the party members. At the meeting several cabinet ministers also voiced their concerns about NCP’s highhandedness. However, non-commitment from Chavan to take corrective steps or express his views has left many disappointed at the end of the meeting.
