Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) will double its courses from the coming academic year.

The announcement was made at the institute’s 72nd convocation ceremony on Wednesday. A total of 332 students got their degrees on the first day of the two-day ceremony. This is also the institute’s platinum jubilee year.

“From the coming academic year beginning from June, several new programmes, courses and schools will be started in all four campuses,” said S Parasuraman, director of TISS. The institute runs three centres and six schools.

The new programmes will be offered in various areas such as liberal arts programme (B A in social science) with a blend of science to health sciences, including social work, law and constitutional governance among others.

“Among the pass-outs this year, 50 graduates have chosen to work as fellows in some of the most important and difficult areas related to the country’s development,” Parasuraman added.
The chairman of National Minority Commission, Wajahat Habibullah, advised students to use Right To Information Act as a tool to eradicate corruption and strengthen the government.

“Politicisation of Civil Services has led to immense level of corruption, resulting in dilution of established ethical norms. You are the future of India and thus play a major role in building our nation. Here opportunities lie for all; you need to identify the objectives,” he said.

Habibullah asked the students to work towards three basic areas of development - education, health sciences and building economy.
