Biker, pedestrians killed in accidents in Mumbai

A 17-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident on JJ flyover on Sunday night. The biker lost control while taking a turn and rammed into the road divider. The pillion rider miraculously escaped unhurt, the police said.

The deceased, Mohammad Sahaad Mohammad Rafiq Merchant, a student, is a resident of Macchiswala building in Dongri. According to the police, Merchant and his friend had come to the CST area at around 9pm for a ride, and after some time, returned via the JJ flyover.

“Around 11.15pm, when they reached the deadly turn at Mandvi Post Office, their Splendor motorcycle skidded. While Merchant went on to hit the divider, the pillion rider fell off the bike,” said senior police inspector Shamsher Pathan of Pydhonie police station.

Merchant was taken to JJ Hospital, where he was declared dead
on arrival. He had sustained severe head injuries, the police said. The police are now trying to gather more details about the owner of the bike.

In another incident, two pedestrians died after allegedly being hit by a speeding tourist vehicle near JJ Hospital on Sunday night. The driver of the vehicle is believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, the police claim. The deceased have been identified as Abdul Sattar Shaikh, 45, and Nasruddin Shaikh Mohammad Hanif, 59. Both used to work in a perfumery shop in Colaba, and are Nagpada residents.

According to police, the incident occurred around 11.30pm when a vehicle driven by one Mehmood Irshad Ali Sayyed, 35, a tourist car driver, rammed his vehicle into the two pedestrians opposite JJ Marg police station.

Sayyed tried to escape, but was caught by passersby and was handed over to the police.
