Anti-corruption crusader, Anna Hazare, on Wednesday sent a five-page legal notice to Congress MP and spokesperson, Manish Vishwanath Tewari, seeking a written apology for his derogatory remarks against him.

The notice has also sought an explanation whether the remarks of Tewari were his personal views or that of the Congress.
In the run-up to Anna’s fast at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, Tewari had on August 14 alleged that Hazare “is corrupt from head to toe”.

Milind Pawar, the Pune-based lawyer who represents Hazare, said although Tewari had expressed regrets for his utterances, Hazare wanted to send the legal notice to drive home the point that no one should make false allegations.

The notice said Tewari would have to bear the cost of the notice, Rs5,000.

Moreover, due to these reckless imputations and defamatory statements, many citizens and followers of Hazare are suspecting his character. “Many of the citizens of India and foreign citizens have enquired about Tewari’s statement. Tewari has committed defamation and is liable to be prosecuted and punished according to the law of land,” the notice stated.

The legal notice was sent to Tewari via email and also by registered post to his Delhi-based residence. “If Tewari does not respond to the legal notice, I shall file a private complaint in the Pune district court against Tewari, provided Anna gives his nod,” Pawar said.

In the legal notice, Pawar reminded Tewari that Hazare is a well-known social worker in India and served the nation through the Indian Army and later through social work. He had always been engaged in fighting corruption and prevented illegal practices in various government departments in the interest of society.

Hazare had been instrumental in enactment of the Right To Information Act, 2002, in Maharashtra and subsequently in the country in 2005. He has a good image in the country as well as across the world as a devoted social worker and is known for his clean record in social work.

He has been presented many awards by the government of India, government of Maharashtra and foreign countries for his contribution to the society, Pawar reminded Tewari.
