Dahisar resident Kaushik Jalawadiya, 20, was kidnapped and killed allegedly at the behest of his sister’s in-laws who believed the boy’s family had murdered his sister’s husband, i.e., their son/brother, three years ago. The family promised to pay Rs5 lakh to Kandivli residents Raju Kaliya, Laxman and Don if they bumped off Kaushik.

Nine years ago, Kaushik’s elder sister Sangeeta eloped with one Bharat Nisar. Both the families were against the marriage. Matters improved gradually and the families accepted Sangeet and Nisar as a couple. Three years ago, Nisar attended the wedding of Kaushik’s elder brother, Bhavesh, in Gujarat. However, he fell into a well and died there.

Nisar’s family was convinced Kaushik had a hand in Nisar’s death. "Nisar’s elder brother Nitin and sister Yogini suspected that Kaushik pushed Nisar into the well. They vowed to exact revenge," said a police officer.

Nitin and Yogini hatched a plan with Nitin’s brother in-law Khajappa Nagappa Dhar alias Raju, 21, to eliminate Kaushik. Raju, who worked in Nitin’s mobile store, introduced the siblings to one Sunil Sharma, who in turn took the trio to Kaliya, Laxman and Don. Money changed hands - Rs50,000 was paid in advance - and the plan to kill Kaushik, a second-year student of Bachelor in Computer Application, was given shape.

Senior police inspector Ansar Peerzade said around 6pm on Monday, Kaushik went to meet his friends at Jari Mari garden which is walking distance from his residence - Mayuri building, Anand Nagar in Dahisar (East). There, he got a call from Raju asking him to come to Kandivli to collect the Rs1,000 that Kaushik had asked for.

On reaching Kandivli, Raju introduced Kaushik to Sunil Sharma alias Sunil Jadiya, Kaliya and Laxman. The trio asked him to come for a small ride towards Goregaon in an autorickshaw. "Kaushik suspected foul play and messaged one of his friends in Gujarati saying he was with Raju and his friends and that they would do something to him," said assistant commissioner of police Sunil Deshmukh. "He also messaged his friend to call him or Raju in case he wanted to know his whereabouts."

The trio forced Kaushik out of the rickshaw on their way to Film City and strangled him to death. Don joined them at the spot and helped drag Kaushik’s body half a kilometre inside the jungle. The killers then hired two local residents, Anil and Naresh, to dump the body deep inside the jungle.

Kaushik’s family lodged a missing complaint on Monday night when he did not return home and converted it to a kidnapping case on Tuesday afternoon. Preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged contract killers were told two weeks ago to kill Kaushik and were paid Rs50,000 in advance. Raju has been arrested. The police said at least nine others are accused in the case. "Several others, including Yogini, Nitin, the car and auto drivers, are being questioned," said Peerzade.

Kaushik’s body has not yet been found. "We have been searching for the body from Tuesday night with sniffer dogs but have been unsuccessful. The two locals who dumped the body are still at large. They are the only ones who can show where the body was dumped. Two police teams are on the lookout for them," said Peerzade.
