A young constable with the Mahim police station has been suspended for abstaining from duty for over two months without intimating the department.

The policeman, Khalil Mawab Pinjari, 25, stopped reporting to work mid-March. He was located in Ajmer over a month later.

The Mahim police said Pinjari missed work during the busy election period and did not give any intimation for being absent with information.

The suspension order was issued by Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police, Zone V.

"Even though there was important bandobast for the Lok Sabha election, without regard for duty and without securing prior permission from the Mumbai police department, Pinjari remained absent from duty. Hence, he has been suspended from the Mumbai police department with immediate effect," read the suspension order.

A police inquiry revealed that the constable, who has been in service for about six years, had gone to visit his parents at Nizampur, in Dhule district. He left them on March 23, to return to Mumbai.

But a couple of days later they found it difficult to contact him on his mobile phone. Worried about his whereabouts, the constable's brother lodged a missing complaint with the Nizampur police.

The Mahim police, who also initiated a probe, traced the constable with the help of information from his acquaintances. "He had apparently joined a 40-day religious tour," said an officer who was part of the inquiry.
