In order to promote Mumbai as an "Event Destination" city, Maharashtra government has decided to declare certain destinations, including star hotels, auditoriums, among others as places where no permission will be required for organizing an event.

At present dozens of permission from different government departments are required before an event could be held, which act as a demotivating force for business, entertainment and show industry.

"We want to turn Mumbai in to film and event capital of Asia," said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis during an event held on Monday at a city hotel to mark the first edition of Maharashtra International Travel Mart (MITM) — a three-day congregation to attract buyers and sellers from tourism industry from across the country and world.

Fadnavis further said that for seeking permission to shoot a film, now one only has to apply online and the permission has to be granted within seven days. "If the permission is not granted within seven days, then it will deemed to have been given," Fadnavis added. A new website and phone app to promote tourism was also launched by him during the event.

Another important highlight of the event was the presence of actor Amitabh Bachchan, who emphasised on the beauty and tourism prosepcts of Maharashtra. Speaking at the event, Bachchan said: "I don't know whether it will be counter productive for me to promote Maharashtra tourism despite being a brand Ambassador of tourism for adjoining state of Gujarat. I am open to be of any help Maharashtra tourism wants from me."

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also announced that number of licences required to open a hotel in Maharashtra will be reduced from 75 to 25. Only 6 forms for licenses will be needed henceforth. The hotel industry has also welcomed the move by the Government.
