A 35-year-old man was allegedly found hanging from the roof of a hotel on Monday in Malad (E). The deceased has been identified as Sabru, a waiter in the hotel situated in Pathanwadi, Kurar.
Around 7.30am on Monday, when locals saw Sabru's hanging body, they immediately called up Kurar police and reported the matter. The body was untied from the knots, then taken to the police station. Later, it was shifted to Siddharth Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctors.
According to the Kurar police, Sabru, who hails from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, had come to Mumbai four months ago to bear his family's daily needs. He got a job of a waiter in the hotel and later also started doing odd jobs like sweeping the hotel and washing dishes. Sabru was appreciated frequently for his work by the hotel owner.
"After about a month, Sabru started looking stressed and there were traces of disturbance in his behaviour. We have learnt that he was working for four months but was paid only for a month. His three months' salary was unpaid and every time he asked for the money, the owner delayed the payment by giving excuses. After realising that he was caught in a financial trap, Sabru started smoking excessively and was often seen coughing by his fellow workers," said an officer from Kurar police station.
She added that the hotel owner had gone to Pune for a week, Sabru started getting calls from his wife in Azamgarh and she demanded money from him. "But he was unable to send money. Due to this, he was facing problems to sustain himself in the city. He is believed to have hanged himself on the first floor of the hotel. The reason behind is believed to be depression caused by financial crisis," said the officer.
"We have recorded statements of workers and the owner of the hotel. Since the deceased has not left any suicide note at the spot, we are probing the exact reasons that drove Sabru to end his life. His post mortem report is awaited. We have informed the family members of the deceased and shall hand over the body to them in a couple of days," added officer said.
