Launching a scathing attack at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Monday criticised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government for its policies that have affected 62 per cent of rural populations.

Pawar was in Mumbai to attend a conference organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha, farmers' wing of the CPM. The aim was to form an alliance with various frontal organisations of Communist Party of India.

On November 29 and 30, the Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha has called a nationwide protest against the BJP government. It has also demanded a special state and parliamentary session to discuss the farmers' issues and approve their charter of demands. These demands include implementation of Swaminathan Commission report for fair prices, transfer of tribal and cultivated land rights to cultivators, equity in the distribution of irrigation water etc.

Pawar said that neither the Central nor the state government is concerned about the agrarian issues. "The state has recorded the highest number of suicide by farmers. In the face of water scarcity, shortage of fodder for livestock, unemployment, and migrations, their lives have become unendurable. These issues have to be addressed immediately," said Pawar.

He pointed out that export of agriproduct has gone down by 22 per cent during Modi's reign. "The agriculture sector has incurred a loss of Rs 61,000 core. Had the export been good, farmers would have got fair prices for their produces. On the other side, import has increased by 65 per cent which has affected local traders badly," Pawar informed.

He asked the farmers and working-class people to unite and fight against the tyranny of "this incumbent government and its anti-farmers policies".

"If we unite, we can force the government to change its policies. We are going through a difficult phase, and we have to fight it out. The reins of the country went into the hands of the wrong people four years ago, it should not happen again. During the election campaigns, Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will bombard you with a lot of promises. We should not get swayed away by these empty and hollow promises. We have to ouster this government in both state and centre," Pawar said.

He also accused BJP of resurrecting the Ram temple dispute to divert attention from the agrarian crisis.

"They are using religion to play the game of 'divide and rule'. Notebandi was a fiasco that damaged our country's economy very badly. Due to wrong policies of Prime Minister Modi, our economy is in big trouble. Besides, the independent institutions like Election Commission, the Central Bank, CBI's credibility is also ebbing. Government interference has increased in these independent institutions and most of their decisions are politically motivated," Pawar alleged.
