The Mumbai traffic police, in its endeavor to ensure safe celebrations during Christmas and New Year, are planning strict road vigilance from Sunday. The department will be undertaking round-the-clock drives and take strict action against offenders to ensure an accident-free festive season.

Over 300 constables and 20 officers will be deployed across the city between December 20 and January 1.

Joint commissioner of police, traffic, BK Upadhyay said, "Our focus will be to check on drunken driving, speeding and riding without helmet. We will be setting up 25 new nakabandis. We will also take help from the local police for additional manpower and enhanced checks via CCTVs."

In its first lap, the drive will be conducted on five days in the first week, after which it will be carried out everyday. The drive will be at its strictest between 10pm and 2am, said officials.

Upadhyay also said the traffic personnel will be using speedometers and breath analysers at all the checkpoints. "We hope the drives we have conducted in the past on drink-driving as well as rash driving will act as a deterrent for motorists during festivities. We will also be asking pub authorities to keep a check on drunk revellers," he added.

This year, there have been 13,895 cases of drink-driving till November 30 and the total fine collected has been over Rs3.21 crore. Last year, the number of drink-driving cases were 16,525 and the total fine collected was Rs3.93 crore. Speeding cases, on the other hand, have been 2,930 this year, with Rs5 lakh collected in fine. That apart, over 2.5 lakh bikers have been caught riding without helmet this year.

Drive safe!
A campaign titled Ride for Safety will be flagged off by the Mumbai traffic police and an organisation, Wheelieboy Adventures, on Sunday to create awareness and highlight safe driving. Eminent celebrities will flag off the drive in which several bikers will be part of a rally. The focus is to promote the safety measures to be followed while driving, including lane discipline, use of helmet and driving without drinking among others.
