Over 48 hours after one of the biggest dacoities in the state, the Thane police have cracked the case with the arrest of six dacoits and recovering more than Rs4 crore in cash. They did so with the help of human and technical intelligence.
The Thane crime branch is now conducting further investigations and connecting the dots to nab the other accused in the case, who are absconding at present. But with the arrests already made and the escape vehicles being recovered, this has already turned out to be a major breakthrough made by the Thane crime branch officers.
"The accused, who had a criminal background, had done their planning well and did not leave any trail before escaping. But we managed to ascertain the guard's involvement after he fumbled with his answers and, once he had confessed, we went on to arrest the other accused from Nashik and Thane," said a crime branch officer.
DCP Parag Manere said, "We had kept the operation under wraps and away from the public's attention as we did not want the dacoits to know about the details of of our investigations. We also made sure that we remained away from the police headquarters and the police stations in order to keep our activities from being detected."
Manere added: "We started connecting the dots after we picked up one of the accused and, with the help of informers, managed to nab the main accused and the others who were roped in for the dacoity."
Thane CP Param Bir Singh said, "We will reward the officers involved in the case for such quick results and recovery of the cash. Now we can say that we have actually checkmated the dacoits."
He added: "Ten teams are working continuously to nab the other accused and we will soon have all the absconding accused in our custody, thus recovering the rest of the cash."
