Thane has been in the forefront of environment friendly initiatives and the city has now become the first in the country to have a district cooling system. It was selected by the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) to implement centralised air conditioning to commercial structures like hospitals, malls, IT parks, townships which will cut down energy consumption by 40 to 50 percent.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is responsible for the implementation of the district cooling system (DCS) in India. "This system is like piped gas where chilled water is circulated to the subscriber's air conditioners/chillers which generates cool air," says an official from the TMC's engineering department. "There is one centralised compressor which generates chilled water for distribution to air conditioners," he said.
This leads to two types of savings - technical as well as commercial. Technically, a centralized compressor reduces the energy consumption. And commercially, the provider of the DCS can bargain with the energy provider on the rates for the provision of chilled air.
"As opposed to individual air conditioning units, this leads to almost 50 per cent less power consumption," added the official.
The specified district cooling system is available internationally. Germany, Japan, Dubai, Korea and European countries have implemented the system. It will be operational in Thane by the end of 2018.
"The feasibility study will take another three to four months after which the contract for this project will be given to a third party through tendering process," the official added.
The project will be based on DBOT (Design Built Operate Transfer) where the service provider will fund the project and the amount will be recovered from the subscribers.
