Ever since Pedder Road Flyover was conceptualised there have been several flip-flops with respect to the plan to have an elevated road as a solution to the increasing number of vehicles on city roads. A study will soon be conducted on a 'shorter version' of the controversial Pedder Road Flyover to ascertain if it's feasible to have two short stretches in either direction rather than a single 4.2km-long bridge.

What's the shorter version?
As reported by dna on September 18, 2013, the south-bound arm will begin near the Lala Lajpatrai College bypassing Haji Ali and Cadbury Junctions only to land near HSBC Bank ATM, ie Sterling Apartment. This will be approximately 1.5km-long with two lanes for traffic. The north-bound bridge will be around a kilometre long, it will start just before Gamadia Junction and terminate close to Lala Lajpatrai College.

Who will conduct the study?
"A pre-feasibility study will be conducted by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. A report on the same will be ready by December-end," said a state official.

What are officials looking to find out?
Another official said, "The study will only mention the technical and engineering aspects. It should say whether it is technically feasible to construct two arms or not and the impact on traffic, among other things." Depending on the outcome of the report and design of the bridge, an estimate would be worked out for the 'mini version' of the project.

When was it decided?
The decision was taken in the empowered committee meeting held recently wherein various state government officials from different agencies participated for coordination and implementation of various projects for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Why has the project been delayed?
The original concept plan is to have 4.2km-long bridge right from Haji Ali Junction to Tambe Chowk near Wilson College (Girgaum Chowpatty). The proposal has been witnessing repeated delay and cost revisions due to consistent opposition from Pedder Road residents, songstress sisters Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosale. Local resident groups have been opposing the project citing 'intrusion in private life' as one of the reasons.
