The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is clearly toothless when it comes to taking action against bachatgats. Records obtained from the BMC show that following repeated inspections, officials from its education department have recommended blacklisting two bachat gats from supplying meals to civic schools. However, sources inform they have still not been blacklisted, thanks to the heavy political backing they enjoy.

A source from BMC told dna, “In most cases, politicians argue and shift the blame of poor quality meals to individual schools, to protect bachat gats, whereas the fact remains that some of these organisations prepare the meals in the most unhygienic conditions.” The source also said that there are strong rivalries between bachat gats. This is probably the reason why the proposal of starting centralised kitchen is still stuck with the state government.BJP leader Manoj Kotak informed that he has been following up the issue of centralised kitchen for a long time. “This week, the Mumbai BJP unit will be meeting the chief minister to discuss a variety of civic issues.

We will bring up the issue of centralised kitchen and hope it will be cleared soon.”

So, once the proposal is approved by the state government, will it mark an end to the poor quality of food supplied by bachat gats? “They can be part of the distribution network,” Kotak said.

Kotak added once the proposal is cleared by the state government, tenders will be floated and reliable names like Iskcon and AkshayPatra will be considered.

“Ideally three centralised kitchens should be supplying meals to theschools of the city, eastern and western suburbs. We will not compromise with the quality of meals provided to students. If bachat gats manage to meet the required standards of centralised kitchens, then they can prepare food at their kitchens, but the ruleswould be very stringent,” said Kotak.
