There was ruckus during the standing committee meeting of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday over pet owners not cleaning their pets' poop from roads across the city. Members from all political parties cried in unison, and demanded action against such pet owners.

The issue cropped up after the civic administration tabled a proposal for awarding contract of sterilisation of stray dogs for three years. However, members demanded that the administration cleared its stand on measures to prevent pet owners from dirtying footpaths and roads.

Standing committee members alleged that the civic administration is not taking the issue seriously. As per law, people have to procure licence from BMC to keep a dog and the owner is also supposed to clean the poop. However, it is often found that owners continue to roam with their pets and leave the poop along the roads.

In November last year, BMC had penalised three people for not cleaning up their pets' poop on Marine Drive. Similar cases were also found on the promenade along the drive. However, the civic body let them off after they agreed to clean up the poop. According to civic officials, there is a fine of Rs 500 for littering by pets.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunjay Mukherjee has said that the civic administration always takes action when it gets any complaint.

Meanwhile, the civic administration cleared that if someone comes out with their pets and do not possess a licence, the pet (dog) will be taken as stray dog. "Such dogs are taken into custody by the civic body, and if required, they will be sterilised. BMC has sterilised 2,80,869 dogs from October 1998 till March 2017," said a senior civic official.

Future plans

Now, in the next three years, the civic body will spend Rs 2.87 crore on sterilisation of dogs for which the proposal was cleared on Tuesday.
