The Indian Railway Tourism and Catering Corporation (IRCTC) on Thursday clarified that the user profile data of its e-ticketing system had not been hacked into or compromised as reported in a section of the media. In an official statement, the railway ticketing PSU stated that "thorough investigations were conducted to detect veracity of the news, however, no such incident has been detected by the technical teams of Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)".

"As soon as the matter came to light on May 2, IRCTC began investigations along with CRIS, the IT arm of Indian Railways, which manages the e-ticketing system. The data centre is in the premises of CRIS. No "Denial of Service attack" (DoS/DDoS) has been successful and the website has been working normally, thereby eliminating any chances of unauthorised interference," IRCTC's statement added.

The IRCTC said various components of the e-ticketing system — internet gateway, network security devices, such as gateway router, firewall, as well as the application delivery controller, Security Information Event Management System web server and database server access logs. "Each of the components has been checked and none has been found to have unusual activity. Technical investigations have also not indicated any unusual activity with respect to various system components," said an IRCTC official.

"The committee in their preliminary report has not found any indication of breach of security in any of the databases of the e-ticketing system. Further investigation by this committee is in progress and once the purported leaked data is made available, more checks will be conducted," said an IRCTC official.

IRCTC's Next Generation e-Ticketing System

The IRCTC website can book 15,000 tickets in a minute. The concurrent user connections were increased from 40,000 to 1.2 lakh in NGeT, which has further been increased to 3 lakh before Diwali rush. About 250 tickets can be booked every second concurrently. The inquiries in NGeT have also been increased from 1,000 per second to 3,000 per second. Capacity in NGeT was increased this year by doubling the servers in integration layer and adding storage space.
