Though inquiry into the leak of an HSC question paper has gone only as far as the arrest of two suspects on March 25, the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) has decided to continue with the checking process, keeping the faith that the paper didn't actually leak. Why have the authorities decided not to have a retest?

"The inquiry will take time. We do not have any leads till now and the matter is under police jurisdiction. We cannot delay the results, since that will have an impact on the admissions and the beginning of the next academic year. So we will continue with the correction process and declare the results. We have ruled out a retest, as it is too late now. We cannot be waiting for the inquiry against these officials anymore," said SY Chandekar, secretary, MSBSHSE (Mumbai).

When and for which paper did the leak occur?
On March 10, the Bookkeeping and Accountancy paper was leaked through WhatsApp half an hour before the exam was due to begin. Although it was conducted as per schedule, the question papers were widely circulated on WhatsApp. This led the Mumbai division of MSBSHSE to file a complaint with the Navi Mumbai police. Within a fortnight a crime branch team managed to trace all the messages on the app and found out that the accused were a teacher and a trustee of a school in Malad.

Why do officials believe the paper leak did not get circulated?
"Based on the details of the inquiry, we will take action against the institute, and may also have a system in place to ensure that such incidents do not occur again. We have decided not to have a retest as there was not much time for students to circulate the leaked paper, given that all centres have students within the exam hall half an hour before the exam starts. There is hardly a chance for the paper to have been leaked," said an official from MSBSHSE.
