The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has identified certain roads in the satellite city for mechanised sweeping. However, the administration refused to name these roads at this stage.

“The process of identifying certain city roads for mechanised sweeping has been completed. We have identified certain roads, but would not like to name them at this stage till a final decision is taken,” said a civic official.

At one of the meetings, standing committee members had suggested that mechanised sweeping be carried out on wide interior roads in the city. The administration had then assured members, and accordingly a survey was carried out to identify some roads.

Mechanised sweeping machines purchased by NMMC last year have been in the news for the wrong reasons. Firstly, questions were raised since these 8 machines will be cleaning only two main roads in the city – the Thane-Belapur Road and the Palm Beach Road. Opposition had questioned the need to spend crores on such machines when the work could have been done manually on this stretch. Secondly, the amount of waste generated on this roads was less compared to interior roads.

While identifying interior roads where mechanised sweeping can be carried out, the administration has taken into consideration the width of these roads so that the machine can make free movement and there is no hindrance to traffic.

Meanwhile, there is also a demand that such machines should carry out cleaning job during night hours or early morning when there is less traffic on road. “I normally use the Palm Beach Road for travel and have found that these machines are cleaning roads during peak morning time. Instead, the administration should use them for cleaning during late hours or early morning,” said Aditya Bhogle, a resident of Belapur.
