Mumbai: Rs 60K siphoned off from lady’s account in card cloning fraud

In 2018, the Mumbai Police had registered as many as 461 cases of card fraud of which only 28 cases were detected, statistics revealed.

A woman, who had visited an electronic appliances store at Bandra, lost Rs 60,000 from her account hours after she made an advance payment for buying a laptop. The woman suspects that her card was cloned by cyber-crooks and the details were used to siphon off money from her account. In 2018, the Mumbai Police had registered as many as 461 cases of card fraud of which only 28 cases were detected, statistics revealed.

"My sister had visited a shop in Bandra to pay an advance for a laptop which she intended to purchase. She used her debit card to make an advance payment of Rs 2,000 and later, left the place," said the victim's reative, who did not wished to be named.

She added, half-an-hour after the victim left, she received transaction alert messages from the bank which stated that there had been two transactions of Rs 40,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively from her account.

"Since she had her card in her possession, she was baffled as to how the transactions took place. The transactions were done from CST. We suspect that the card was cloned and its details were misused to make fraudulent transactions," she said.

The relative said that the ordeal had just begun for them when they had to register a police complaint. "Since the Chunabhatti Police Station is nearest to our place, we went there to register a complaint but, they were not willing to register an FIR. After a lot of persuasion, the Chunabhatti Police registered our complaint," she said.
