A day after the octogenarian couple was found murdered in their own house in Ekta Elite building in Khar (w), the Khar police have arrested two – a woman caretaker and her 'friend' from Nagpur for murdering and robbing the elderly couple.

The accused have been identified as housemaid Parvati Khaka (20) and her alleged boyfriend Singhasan Mukut Ekka (26).

Nanak Makhijani (85) and his wife Daya (84) were found dead in their flat on Thursday morning to another maid and the Khar police had then registered an FIR in the matter.

According to the police, Parvati had started working as a maid with Makhijanis on June 11, had allegedly called Singhasan to Mumbai, with an intention to rob the elderly couple. Parvati is a resident of Sundargarh district in Orissa, who had come via two references to work for the Makhijanis and had earlier worked in Mumbai at 2-3 houses in suburbs. The police said, when she started working as a full-time maid, she saw that the couple was vulnerable and rich, which is when she hatched a plan to commit a robbery along with Mukut Ekka .

Parvati then called Mukut Ekka , who is also from Sundargarh. Following the plan, Mukut Ekka arrived in the city late on Wednesday and entered the Ekta Elite society at 2 am when the watchman was fast asleep. Mukut Ekka knocked on the door of the flat and Parvati let him in, following which they started robbing the house.

Anil Kumbhare, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 8) said, "It is still unclear whether the elderly couple was killed before, during or after the robbery, but the Makhijanis were both suffocated and strangulated in a bid to kill them. When the police reached the spot on Thursday morning, the Makhijanis' hands and legs were tied with a rope and a dupatta was draped around their necks. We are still probing the motivation to kill them, but prima facie it seems that in a bid to not be caught, the couple was killed."

Soon after committing the crime, Parvati and Singhasan decamped with jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh and cash worth Rs nine thousand. The accused duo then boarded the 12859 Gitanjali Express at 6.13 am from Dadar Central railway station and were on their way to their hometown in Orissa.

"After learning about their escape plan we realised that it was impossible to reach before them, and hence the police contacted the railway GRP at Nagpur railway station and jointly took them in custody from Nagpur at 6.55 pm on Thursday evening. The accused duo was handed over to Khar police late on Thursday, and were brought to Mumbai on Friday evening", added DCP Kumbhare.
