City's police department owes Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) an outstanding amount of Rs. 5 crore. This is being sighted as the reason for dismal performance of TMT's services which in turn has been affecting a large number of commuters across the city.

An official from the concerned department shares that earlier, the due was Rs.7 crore, out of which an amount of Rs 2 crore has been paid off. The remaining amount has been pending for the past three to four years.TMT constantly followed up on the matter with the concerned department but funds have not yet been approved.

Sharing more information on this, TMT Manager Sudhir Raut said,"The long pending dues are against the TMT services used by the police staff on a daily basis and special occasions as well. As it is a govt. wing we are sure that the money would be paid off but delay definitely makes things difficult for us."

About eight to nine months back, a high level meeting was conducted by the then TMT manager Devidas Tekale with the higher officials of the police department to clear the dues, as result of which a sum of Rs 2 crore was paid.

The police department usually receives an annual compensation cost as police service transportation grant and they use this money to pay the expenses. However, we have learnt from the sources that the concerned file is pending with some department, hence, the dues could not be cleared.

While the police department owes TMT, the transport body has outstanding amount worth five crores to be paid to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) authorities. If the police clear their payment toward the TMT, the latter will be able to further clear their dues.

MGL had stopped their supply to the TMT as the debts had run to a huge amoutn of Rs 19 crore and it was only after partial payments, the supplies were continued.

TMT manager adds that since then they have been paying the MGL regularly so that the services remain unaffected. Police officials said that they have taken up the matter and will ensure that the payments to TMT are made at the earliest.
