The State crime bureau report figures of crimes against women in Mumbai make us increasingly rethink about it's much famed 'safe city' for women tag.

Last year alone, out of 4356 women who were raped in the state, a whooping 20 per cent were from Mumbai.

Among the 12,238 odd cases of molestation registered in the state, 15 percent of the cases were from Mumbai. registered across the state.

According to the Mumbai Police statistics, last year 751 women were raped in Mumbai, of which 284 victims were minors. On the other hand, 2268 molestation cases were registered in Mumbai.

The average detection rate in the cases of rape is over 80 percent. Last year, 684 rape cases and 1103 molestation cases were detected. The statistics further revealed that of 7113 cases of kidnapping of women registered in the state, 1292 cases were reported in Mumbai alone, last year.

A senior officer, who analysed the statistics, said, "Most of the kidnapping cases involving minor girls are actually cases of elopement. We have seen in most such cases that boys and girls flee from home due to opposition to their relationship from families. In such cases the boys or men are known and hence it becomes easy to trace them either through human or technical intelligence. "

"Things have changed after 2012 Delhi rape case. Now, the police promptly register cases of sexual harassment against women," said lawyer Yogendra Pratap Singh.
