In order enhance the image of the police among tourists visiting Mumbai, the city police are getting their young constabulary trained in spoken English. The top brass of the force has observed on few occasions that foreigners and cops try to ignore each other as probably the foreigners do not feel comfortable trying to explain constabulary their problems as the latter sometimes do not understand the language and cannot converse properly with them.

"On few occasions I have observed that foreigners are being harassed by beggars at tourist places and even though there was a police constable, neither the foreigner, nor the constable took efforts to communicate with each other to shove away the beggar. This was probably because of the language barrier," said additional commissioner of police, south region, Krishna Prakash.

According to Prakash, it is important for the young constabulary to have good command over spoken English. "We have various places in south Mumbai which are tourist attractions. Mohammad Ali Road is a popular food area, Chor Bazaar for artefacts and other usual places such as Gateway of India and Marine Drive. If foreigners are in any problem, they should feel free to approach the police and for that our constabulary should be well versed with English so that if they spot any foreign national facing any problem, they can come for their rescue. This way, both would establish better interaction with each other," Prakash said.

Taking a note of this, the police department have enrolled young constables from south region for a 25-day spoken English course in an institute in Fort area. "A batch of 20 constables has already passed the course. This is also a way to enhance the image of the police force among the foreigners visiting the city. Selected young constables from all the 16 police stations from south region would be imparted this training," Prakash said.
