With no solution in the sight for the issue of garbage collection and transportation and garbage continuing to be transported in open trucks, city cops will now act as negotiators between Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and contractors who are ferrying garbage without taking any safety measures in the open trucks.

Navi Mumbai wing of BJP had filed a criminal case against the NMMC and its contractor for ferrying garbage in open trucks. A case has been filed under section 269 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which applies to negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life.

Santosh Pachalag, who has filed the case, said, "I was called to the Nerul police station on Thursday, where in deputy municipal commissioner, Babasaheb Rajale was present too. The officials informed me about the problems they are facing and how the contractors will stop work if any action was taken further increasing the problem."

He added, "This means the contractor will continue to blackmail us and we will continue to suffer in the process." The contractors appointed by the NMMC are ferrying garbage in open trucks which is a serious health hazard. Residents too, have been voicing concerns over open ferrying of garbage.

After discussions, it was decided that the police will intervene in the matter and a meeting has been fixed on Monday at the civic head office to discuss solutions.

Meanwhile, NMMC officials contended that we have directed contractors to use tarpaulin sheets to cover the garbage while transporting.

Navi Mumbaikars have been grappling with garbage woes for nearly two years. Garbage collection in the city has been paralysed after NMMC terminated contract of M/S Antony Waste Handling for inept services in August 2012 and complaints. Since then, the civic body has been struggling to clear garbage on a daily basis. The waste is being carried in open trucks, instead of garbage compactors.
