"We were at the muhurat to a Pramod Chakraborty's film starring Amitabh Bachchan, who couldn't make it for the function. So, his recordings were played to start the proceedings and this was the time when the idea of Mr India hit my mind. The idea to have a film, where the hero is invisible and only his voice can be heard. It was only a dream untill I met Boney Kapoor," shared Javed Akhtar, the writer of Mr India.

MAMI's Mumbai Mela — which was held on Friday at Mehboob Studios, Bandra — had its time of nostalgia when the whole team of cult classic film Mr India reunited on the stage and shared their experiences. The Jhakas actor Anil Kapoor, Ms Hawa Hawai Sridevi, Boney, Akhtar and Satish Kaushik were present at this event and they were accompanied by other cast members including Aftab Shivdasani and Ahmed Khan.

Mr India directed by Shekhar Kapoor, released in 1987 and went on to be one of the most iconic Indian movie of all time. The film was a great success, but this success came with a lot of hard work. Talking about the reason behind doing a film which was such a tricky project, Anil said: "The first reason was Javed sir. This was my second film with him and I was all set to work with him again. When we started to look for the heroine for the film, everybody said that it should be the best actress of that time and it was Sridevi. These were enough incentives for me to do this film."

The team went on to talk about the funny characters and their stories. Every character starting from Arun to Mogambo to Calendar had its own flavour. Satish Kaushik popularly known to us as Calendar, who was also working as Chief assistant director in the film shared the story of Calendar.

"I was a frustrated actor. I wanted that role of the cook and I never agreed to any suggestions for the role. When we sat to name the character I told Javed sahab the story of my father's dealer who always used Calendar in every sentence. Javed sahab became so interested that he named the character Calendar and this is how the character of the cook was named Calendar and it has been my identity since then," says Kaushik.

According to Javed Akhtar, the whole character of Mogambo had borrowed elements from different peoples like his salute was similar to how Hitler used to salute. "But it all would have been in vain if Amrish Puri didn't play this character," he added.

When asked about the sequel of the film, Boney Kapoor said that they are still looking for a suitable script but the sequel will start sooner than we think.
