The Nagpada police on Monday arrested a 28-year old man for manhandling an officer during a nakabandi, and driving a red beacon car with tinted windows without the requisite permissions.

The arrested person has been identified as Salman Abdul Sattar Supariwala, a resident of Agripada.

According to the police, sub-inspector Kiran Shinde, 27, posted with Nagpada police, along with his colleagues were on a nakabandi duty on Monday at a South-bound road opposite Yaadgaar hotel.

Around 4.20 pm, the police party signalled a scooter to stop, but the rider didn't and sped ahead. An officer from the station informed that the rider also abused the policemen. "Shinde took down the two wheeler's registration number (MH-01-BP-2586), and alerted the traffic police that it gone towards the direction of the Mumbai Central signal."

The said scooter was stopped by the traffic police at the signal, but the rider argued with the traffic cops there and fled, abandoning the scooter when the traffic cops asked for his license.

The officer said that Supariwala returned to the nakabandi spot in a red beacon Skoda car (MH-04-DW-9693). He threatened Shinde, claiming he had 'contacts at the highest level' and that he would strip the officer of his uniform, and even manhandled him.

"Since Supariwala did not have any permissions for putting the red beacon and tinted glass on his car, he was taken to the police station for questioning," added the officer.

Supariwala has been booked and arrested under IPC Sections 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 171 (Wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent), 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and under relevant sections of Motor Vehicles Act.

Supariwala was placed under arrest later in the day, and his scooter and car have been seized by the police.
