A 32-year-old man was arrested by Taloja police for allegedly killing a staff of a sweet shop, who did not provide him a polythene bag for the sweets that he purchased.

The man was arrested on Tuesday night after the sweet shop staff died while recuperating at a hospital in Panvel, on Tuesday morning.

The accused identified as Anil Maruti Bhoir, a resident of Shirvali in Panvel taluka slapped the deceased identified as Kalu Ram, 35, on Sunday. Bhoir purchased sweets from Riddhi Siddhi sweet shop in Shirvali.

Police said due to the ban on use of polythene bags, the shop did not have colourful polythene bag. The accused, however, kept on insisting that he wanted a colourful polythene bag to carry sweets.

Ravindra Budhwant, Senior Police Inspector of Taloja Police station said, "Bhoir purchased sweets of Rs 100. He slapped Ram behind his ear, who did not give him a plastic bag of his choice. Severe injuries in veins led to Ram's death."

A shopkeeper from Taloja said that since the state government had banned use of polythene bag, several shops do not keep it.

"We have to pay fine if we keep polythene bags. But, a few shops have to keep polythene bag, as customers demand. It is not possible for us to keep variety of polythene bag," said a shopkeeper in Taloja.

Senior Police Inspector Budhwant said Bhoir has admitted to have committed the crime.

He was booked for murder under section 302 of IPC.
