The Mankhurd police on Wednesday night arrested a 25-year-old drug addict in connection with the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl, whose body was found three days ago. The police claimed to have cracked the case on the basis of information provided by the victim's mother, who said the accused allegedly tried giving a chocolate to the victim on the day she went missing.

According to the Mankhurd police, the victim's mother informed the police that on Sunday, when she was returning back from her work along with her daughter, the accused, identified as Kancha, had told her that he wanted to offer chocolate to the victim.

"The victim's mother told us that on Sunday night, when she was on her way back home with her two daughters, the accused had approached her and told her that her daughter is a very good girl and that he wants to offer her a chocolate," said NH Shaikh, senior police inspector, Mankhurd police station. He added: "The victim's mother, who found the accused to be in an inebriated state, whisked both her daughters away from the spot and left in a hurry."

The four-year-old victim had gone near Mankhurd station with her mother, who sells groundnuts and puffed rice there. After closing her business, when the girl's mother was on her way back home, she had stopped briefly at a footwear shop to buy shoes for her elder daughter. The Mankhurd police claim that Kancha, taking advantage of the crowded station area, kidnapped the victim and escaped from the spot.

The victim's mother searched the entire area with the help of locals but could not find her, after which she approached the Mankhurd police and registered a case of kidnapping. However, on Monday morning, the body of the victim was found in bushes close to Agarwal compound in the area.
