There is some good news for people using Jogeshwari station, all thanks to the dogged persistence of a commuter-cum-social activist, Mansoor Umer Darvesh. In response to a letter sent by Darvesh through his advocate, the Western Railway has said two escalators bought for Goregaon station will be shifted to Jogeshwari.

What has the activist been doing?
Darvesh, who has been regularly filing applications under the Right to Information Act with the railways, has been inquiring about the status of escalators at the station for several months now. However, what peeved him was that there were discrepancies in the replies given by the railways.

What did WR's reply state?
It said the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) was in the process of installing escalators at Jogeshwari station. A follow-up RTI with MRVC by Darvesh, however, revealed that MRVC had no such plans.

What is his grouse?
"It is very troublesome for commuters if government agencies start giving such confusing answers. Ideally, WR should have answered my RTI plea after checking with the MRVC," said Darvesh.
Speaking to dna, Darvesh said, "The two foot overbridges at Jogeshwari are 25 feet and 27 feet. How do you expect old women and the disabled to climb? Isn't it the railways' duty to rectify these things with the help of lifts or escalators?"

At last...
Now, as per a letter written by WR's senior divisional electrical engineer (power) KL Meena, "one escalator on north and south booking offices each will be provided by shifting (the same) from Goregaon".
