In what could be either termed as strong signs to push development in the city or an important move to garner maximum votes ahead of the civic elections in 2017, the general body, on Thursday, approved most of the projects without any discussion.

All the scheduled 98 proposals were approved within 10 minutes during the 30-minute-long meeting and Rs100 crore have been cleared for the projects. There was no opposition from any corporators on any proposals, thus, the meeting concluded in peacefully.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) chief Sanjeev Jaiswal said, "Most of the projects were good and they were all needed for the development of the city. Many proposals like renovation of crematoriums, road repairing and increasing health facility in the city hospitals were the need of the hour and it was good that approvals to all of these have been given."

During the meeting, corporators said for the past few years, no work was being done at ward levels, upsetting the voters. "Considering this, the nod to the proposals was necessary and now, work will be undertaken," said a corporator, requesting anonymity.

It may be noted that the municipal election in Thane are scheduled in 2017 and the corporators are left just with a year to show work that they undertook in their respective wards. Whether it was about the clean-up marshals for the city or a robotic excavator and road sweepers, all the projects were given equal importance and passed in unison.

The approval of these many projects at once has come across as good news for both the corporators contractors. Residents hope that work will start soon and city would be richer amenity and infrastructure wise.
