Hyundai Motor India, the second largest carmaker in the country, has announced the recall of its premium sports utility vehicle (SUV) model, Santa Fe, to address the 'stop lamp switch' issue.

Hyundai is recalling 2,437 Santa Fe vehicles of the 2011 model year in India for the manufacturing period of June 26, 2011 - September, 26, 2013.

The company, in a statement on Saturday, said that it is initiating a service campaign to voluntarily recall and replace the 'stop lamp switch' of Santa Fe (model year 2011) due to potential malfunction. The replacement will be done free of cost by the company.

Owners of the involved vehicles will be notified in a phased manner to bring in their vehicles for replacing the part.

Earlier this month, Honda Cars India recalled 31,226 units of its entry level cars Brio and Amaze to address the 'mis-assembly of proportioning valve' issue in the vehicles manufactured between February 28, 2013 to January 16, 2014.

Recalls are increasingly becoming a routine affair within the automotive industry. The industry reported a number of recalls in the past two years, ever since the adoption of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers' (SIAM) Voluntary Recall Code in July 2012. After having discussed about the introduction of a mandatory recall policy for more than a year now, the government is yet to formally announce the same. The policy is expected to be announced this financial year, according to industry sources.

Maruti Suzuki, the biggest carmaker, last month recalled 1,03,311 units of Ertiga, Swift and DZire -- to replace faulty fuel filler neck. While, Japanese carmaker Toyota Kirloskar Motor recalled around 45,000 units of its multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) Innova earlier this year to rectify a defect in the steering column.

In one of the biggest recalls in the industry, General Motors last year recalled 1,14,000 units of its sports utility vehicle (SUV) Tavera to address emissions and specifications issues.
