How to live better? Mumbai's students have the best ideas

Out of 500 schools across the country, three schools from Mumbai were short-listed for their teams' innovative ideas in a competition held by IndiaFirst Life Insurance as part of their social initiative 'Happy India'.

Out of 500 schools across the country, three schools from Mumbai were short-listed for their teams' innovative ideas in a competition held by IndiaFirst Life Insurance as part of their social initiative 'Happy India'.

The city students' ideas based on education, health, energy conservation, security, environment protection and financial inclusion were among the best. Three teams from Ryan International at Kandivali, two from Podar International School, Santacruz and one from D G Khetan School, Malad, were among the winners.

D G Khetan School's team called 'The spunk' came up with an idea to make a portal named 'Arham' available for struggling artists (painters). They had bought the paintings of these artists and sold them by holding an exhibition, the amount from which is being used to educate underprivileged children.

Ryan International came up with eco-friendly ideas. While team 'Challengers' have decided to bring dustbins in local societies, animal waste digester and paper bag distribution, team 'Genius Minds of Innovation' had decided to spread awareness about not using plastic bags amongst vendors, shopkeepers and children.

Vignesh Pai, student, Ryan International, said, "We have been awarded Rs 50,000 for sharing our idea and with the help of that we have sought permission from the local BMC office to built a 50 metre road in Thakur village of plastic bitumen which will have potholes during rainy season."

Among two teams of Podar International school, one team "Team Next" have come up with idea to help unemployed to get jobs and another team 'We, change' have idea to voluntarily transport fruits and vegetables from the farmers or wholesale markets, directly to the customers.

Tamanna Khanna, spokesperson, IndiaFirst, said, "The young change makers who have been short listed will be given Rs 50,000 as an award and they will utilize it to bring change in the society by implementing their idea in real life."
