The Air Intelligence Unit of Customs department on Saturday arrested four people involved in smuggling gold worth Rs 1.86 crore. Those arrested have been identified as Haryana residents Rakesh Kumar, Virender Singh, Surender Singh and Dayanand.
According to the AIU officials, Rakesh, who had arrived from Bangkok by Jet Airways flight, was going to Dubai the same day. While Virender, Surender and Dayanand were going to Delhi from Mumbai by Air India flight the same day.
"On the basis of suspicion, Virender, Surender and Dayanand were checked and their personal search resulted in the recovery of five silver coloured crude gold kada, seven silver coloured crude gold pendant and 11 silver coloured crude gold chain, all weighing 6545 gms. Total value of the gold is Rs 1.86 crore," said the official.
He said Virender, Surender and Dayanand told the officials that the consignment was handed over by Rakesh Kumar in a toilet near the boarding gate of international airport following which Kumar was held.
"Kumar told us that the said gold was carried by him from Bangkok as per the instructions from one Dilbag Chahar and he was directed to pickup the said gold from a trading company in Bangkok and deliver it to the other arrested persons. Kumar said that he was paid Rs 20,000 for the job, while others were paid Rs 15000 each to receive the consignment and get it to Delhi," the official said.
The agency is now probing who all are part of this syndicate and whether the arrested members had smuggled goods and jewellery in the past as well.
