Finance student, Rahul Khanna (name changed), told DNA, “People feel that if someone is from a good family, he or she will not be into drugs. To be honest, it’s nothing like that. Almost everyone does it and you won’t even know it. I don’t see anything bad in smoking up. In today’s day and age, a youngster is faced with so much stress, studies, work and complicated relationships that once in a while rolling a joint is just the answer to de-stress.”
Akaash Seth (name changed), an entrepreneur, said the notion that these things happen only at rave parties is wrong. “Cocaine, also known as Charlie, snow-white, snow, blow (because of Johnny Depp’s movie Blow), nose candy, powder or CD is extremely easily available in Pune, costing anything between Rs1,500 to Rs4,500 per gram depending on the quality, your bargaining skills and how close or friendly you are to the drug peddler,” he said.
According to Abdool (name changed), Pune peddlers will tell you that it’s pure Brazilian coke or Columbian coke so you might have to pay higher. “As one normally buys just one gram of coke, it’s too easy to carry with you in your pocket anywhere. It either comes in small cut out piece of a transparent plastic bag that’s knotted or in the small round plastic bottles in which homeopathy medicines come in. So a person can be carrying coke in his wallet, pocket or bag and you won’t even know it.”
According to Akaash, the Pune peddlers will not give anyone the ‘maal’ (goods or drugs) as they are scared they might get caught. “They will give you only if you’re a regular or you come via a good recommendation. My guy will not pick up anyone’s phone that he doesn’t know so if my friends want some stuff, I will first call him and tell him that I know these people and to give them a good rate. I will then message him their number and only after that will he pick up their calls.”
Shirin M (name changed) told DNA, “When you call the peddler, one uses code names as you’re always scared that their phone might be tapped. The code name for Ecstasy that costs Rs700 per pill in the city is E or X, while the code name for LSD is A, drop or blotter. In E, the varieties that are popular in Pune are white Mercedes, pink dolphin, blue dolphin, pink star or pink Lexus. In Pune, the most famous are the Hoffman stamps. The peddler sells you a postage stamp and one has the lick the stamp (the side that you stick).”
