Responding to Bombay High Court's appeal to avoid violence and restrain themselves from taking extreme steps like committing suicide on Tuesday, Navi Mumbai and Parli unit of Maratha Kranti Morcha have called off the sit in protest scheduled on August 9. However, the other district units will meet on Wednesday to decide the future course of the bandh.

They have also decided to pursue future agitations in a peaceful fashion. Navi Mumbai unit of Sakal Maratha Samaj had passed a resolution to cancel August 9 agitations in Navi Mumbai. Other district units of Maratha Sakal Samaj are likely to take the same decision shortly.

Keeping in mind the death of a Maratha youth and damage of several government properties in a recent protest, they have decided to call off the Thiyya Andolan and Chakka Jam on August 9 in Navi Mumbai, said Maratha leader Narendra Patil.

"In our area, the situation is already tense. The relationship between Maratha, Aagri and Koli community turned sour in the previous agitations. Other communities blamed the Maratha community for the violence that led to damage of vehicles. We do not want to strain the relationship further. Therefore, to maintain the peace and harmony in our area, we decided to call off the strike on August 9," Patil said.

He also welcomed the Bombay High Court's appeal of not indulging in violent protest and continuous suicides of Maratha youths for Maratha reservations cause. "We have to respect the court and its decisions. We cannot put pressure on the court and backward commission. It may backfire on us. We understand community sentiments, but we in live democracy, therefore, need to follow the democratic procedure," Patil added.

"We will continue with the scheduled strike on August 9. On Wednesday we have called a state-wide meeting of all Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) conveners in Aurangabad where we will take a decision in the light of court's observation", Sanjeev Bhor, Maratha leader from Ahmednagar district.

Bhaiya Patil, social media coordinator of MKM told DNA on Tuesday that only a few units of Maratha Sakal Samaj had taken the decision of calling off the strike on August. "We welcome the court appeal but at the same time the court should have asked the government why they delayed the entire procedure to pave way for Maratha reservations," Patil said.

Earlier, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had appealed the community to end the protest. However, they had demanded a time-bound program for the reservations, only then they would call off the strike.
