The East Indian community, which considers itself to be original inhabitants of the city, will be conducting a rally on Sunday for their demands. The rally will start at 10.30 am from Mount Mary's Church and will end at the St. Stanislaus Grounds in Bandra.

"It is surprising that while other communities have been granted with their demands, the East Indian Community who are the original inhabitants of Mumbai, have not been granted basic rights," said Alphi D'Souza, chief co-ordinator of the Mobai Gaothan Punchayet, a group that is organising the march.

The community members have now made special demands besides some others with which they feel that their community will be helped in getting uplifted, empowered, restored and revived.

These include special housing policy and schemes for East Indians, education and medical assistance, food stalls, heritage structures, Holy Crosses and Gaothan religious structures to be restored and protection, and special permissions for Umbrachapani, and East Indian Bhavan.

Some of these demands were also made by the community members before the elections. The community stated in a press release that members not be charged with property tax in Mumbai, Thane, Vasai and Raigad districts and that land donated to churches and the archdiocese should not be sold and if not developed, should be returned for community development.

They also reiterated their demands of OBC certificate to the community so that it helps them get education and employment related benefits.
