Around 20 youths from a local gang went on a rampage after getting drunk and barged into houses of Sai Prakash Niwas, Shirdinagar at Nallasopara assaulting men and women.
Shocked residents could not fathom what had hit them in the wee hours on New Year’s day. “Around 3am someone knocked on our door. When I opened it, 4 persons barged in and started vandalising our house. They hit my husband with rods and bamboos; when I tried to stop them, they slapped me and pushed me aside. All of them were drunk,” said Poonam Vijay Singh, resident of Sai Prakash Niwas.
They broke open the society gate, smashed window panes and even removed political banners in the area.
“We we woke up when we heard loud noises and saw at least 20 people with bamboo and iron rods beating our neighbours and misbehaving with women. We alerted others in the society and they fled from the scene,” said Roopam Shah.
When the word of this unprecedented incident spread, around hundred people from the locality gathered at Nallasopara police station in protest.
“We have been assured by a senior police inspector that he will put into action 15 constables and two officers to arrest the accused,” said Manish Joshi, said a resident.
Senior Police Inspector Mukund Mahajan said, “We have received complaints from three persons and have registered the case accordingly. We have filed a case of rioting and other relevant charges against Jaiprakash Singh, Pawan Bidlan, Ravi Bidlan, Pankaj Bidlan and their accomplice. We will soon make arrests and produce them before the court.
