Officials from Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have identified at least 25 American nationals who had ordered consignment of sex enhancement drugs and pain killers to be smuggled out of Mumbai. The agency could soon get Mutual Legal Assistance Request (MLAT) or Letter Rogatory (LR) issued against the foreign-based suspects, through diplomatic channels.
On June 27, the agency had busted two different rackets wherein courier firms were smuggling out banned drugs and medicines to United States of America (USA) by concealing them into food items.
According to DRI sources, based on specific intelligence Mumbai Zonal Unit of DRI had seized consignments containing 30 kilogram of Methaqualone powder concealed inside food items, 1.18 lakh Sildenafil (viagra) tablets, 20,000 Vidalista (viagra) tablets, 30,000 carisoprodol tablets and 25,000 Aspadol tablets which are pain killers (all declared as assorted items), from the courier terminal at the international airport. The said consignment was seized under the NDPS Act and Customs Act.
“Three Marol based courier firms - Om International Courier, Trans Air Courier and Continental Courier have come under our scanner. The courier firms used to charge heavy commission to smuggle out these banned drug and medicines to US. We have identified 25 Americans from New York, New Jersey who had ordered the consignment. Through diplomatic channels, we would get MLAT or LR issued against them in due time; in the Methaqualone case we had held owner of Om International Courier Sunil Dhutia and Bhaves Shah, owner of Euphoria,” a government official said.
