Over the years, Mumbaikars have lived to learn with the potholes that mark several roads in the city, while the authorities turn a blind eye to the situation.
Now, however, Mumbai's potholes have been brought into the spotlight in an unusual manner - as protagonists of stories. Rupesh Mandal and his friends, who started the 'Fill in the Potholes' Project, aim to draw peoples' attention to the remorseful state of Mumbai's roads and shame the authorities into acting. They see the potholes as blank spaces in the roads that need to be 'filled with stories'.
The initiative has also come up with a mobile application - 'Pothole Watch' - through which Mumbaikars can use their smartphones to report the GPS location of a pothole. However, the owners of the initiative need funds to develop the mobile app, and so have started a crowdfunding campaign, through which one can donate and contribute to the funds for the app. This will help the authorities to speed up the process of filling up potholes.
If the crowdfunding drive is successful, the owners of the 'Fill in the Potholes' Project aim to launch the app - for free - by April 2015.
