After two videos posted by a 35-year-old Kandivli resident, Ami Sheth, showing customers being shortchanged at a petrol pump in Charkop, went viral on social media, the Petrol Dealers Association in Mumbai now wants all its members to install Automated Fuel System Monitors — a more accurate sensor-based system that records precise data on the amount of fuel dispensed to a vehicle — inside the sales cabin of the pumps for the benefit of consumers.

As part of the system, sensors are installed in the underground storage tanks at pumps and inside the dispensing units and their nozzles, allowing for a more precise tracking of the fuel dispensed.

In case they suspect they have been cheated, customers can go back to the petrol pump and demand to be shown the data pertaining to their transaction.

"The consumer can check the time when they refuel the tank, and can approach the manager and ask him to show the quantity of fuel supplied," said Ravi Shinde, President, Petrol Dealers Association, Mumbai.

"A few petrol pumps in the city have equipped themselves with the system. Others are expected to follow suit," said Shinde.

Speaking about customers being able to pre-check the fuel dispensing unit's accuracy by demanding that a standard measure be filled first, Shinde said, "A difference of 25 ml is allowed, but a difference of 70ml or more proves that the dispensing unit has been tampered with, which will lead to cancellation of the petrol pump agency's license if they are found violating the norms," said Shinde.

Sheth said, "The initiative could keep a track on the petrol pump attendants who at times deliver less petrol and will also keep a check on tampered machines."
