The Mumbai Police Crime Branch, which is probing the death of inmate Manjula Shetye, have reportedly found CCTV footage of the assault on her in Byculla Jail on June 23.

Crime Branch sources said they recovered CCTV footage wherein it can be seen that Shetye was dragged by two jail staff and others can be seen assaulting her. The police said all the six arrested can be seen in the footage and there is a possibility of involvement of other jail staffers in the case.

Sources said the probe had revealed that the accused assaulted Shetye as they felt she was influencing other Byculla jail inmates, who would listen to her more than the jail staff.

"We are interrogating the accused to get the exact sequence of events, and the motive behind the assault. However, they are not willing to cooperate. So far, we have recorded the statements of four inmates in the murder case, and statements of others are being recorded, which we are comparing with those of the accused. We will be also calling other jail staffers for questioning as there is a possibility of destruction of evidence," said a crime branch officer.

Demands of kin

Manjula Shetye's brother has demanded that Sathe be held responsible for supporting the accused. He also alleged that Sathe derailed the probe into Shetye's death.
