Thakkar, an accused in Gosikhurd Dam irrigation scam probed by Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), took his own life after firing a round at his right temple with his licensed revolver.
Family of contractor Jigar Thakkar, who allegedly shot himself dead at Marine Drive on Tuesday, told the police in their statements that Thakkar appeared disturbed since past few days over financial issues. Speaking to DNA, the family has said that they never thought Thakkar would take such an extreme step. The Marine Drive police has recorded statements of Thakkar’s father, brother and his driver, who had driven him from Thakkar’s Ghatkopar residence to Marine Drive.

The police is now verifying the documents related to the Gosikhurd Dam project, which were found from Thakkar’s car. The police believe that the documents can reveal more details about the project. “We are in the process of verifying the documents and are also coordinating with the ACB, who in January this year had filed a charge sheet against Thakkar and his brother in the said case. We have not recorded statements of other family members and friends of Thakkar as they are not in a condition to talk at the moment,” said a senior police officer.
People known to Thakkar have told the police that latter had been stressed after the charge sheet was filed and was upset over loss in the business, sources said. The police is now scrutinising Thakkar’s mobile phone records, SMSes and emails to ascertain with whom he had communicated before his death and what drove him to commit suicide. “Things would be much clear after we record detailed statements of Thakkar’s family members,” said another police officer.
Meanwhile, Thakkar’s family is in deep shock over the suicide and is unable to understand what exactly happened on Tuesday. Thakkar’s son, Dhruv told DNA, “We all are in a state of trauma and stress due to the incident and now are waiting for other family members to come for the funeral.” Jigar Thakkar’s funeral will take place on Thursday after the arrival of all the family members.
