The rise the number of drinking water supplying tankers in Maharashtra has shown that Chief Minister Devendra Fadanavis’s pet project Jalyukt Shivar (watershed management scheme) has completely failed, alleged Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant on Wednesday.

Sawant claimed that in 2014, the total rainfall was over 70 per cent and the total tanker supply was 71, while in 2015, the total rainfall was 59.49%, the tankers number were 693 and in 2017, the rainfall is 74.03% and the tanker numbers have drastically increased to 715.  “It shows that many parts of Maharashtra are facing the severe drought. That drought situation and scarcity of water compelled the administration to increase the number of water supplying tankers. This is happening despite spending huge Rs 7,000 crore over CM’s pet project Jalyukta Shivar. This mega scheme did not yield any result. Where has the honest tax papers money gone? That has to be probed,” demanded Sawant.

He also demanded the resignation of Irrigation Minister Girish Mahajan resignation. “Under the nose of irrigation minister, this so much money was used that has to be probed and accounted.  It also means that the huge kickbacks were paid and large quantum of corruption taken place while giving contracts and carrying out superficial work of Jalyukta Shivar,” Sawant alleged.
