A number of citizens have started an online campaign against illegal eateries and unauthorised construction. These have been done by tagging Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on social media or writing letters to him and the municipal commissioner.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit has started a social media campaign asking citizens to tag the chief minister and municipal officials about illegal eateries and hotels in tweeted with the hashtag, #DontBurnMumbai.

"I have asked all my colleagues to tag the CM and municipal officials with the illegalities that exist in their areas. The idea was to start a movement and make officers accountable. This way things will come to their notice and will be in the public domain," said Pandit.

He added, "I have also put three videos and tagged the CM. It is surprising that the municipal corporation's Twitter account does not work. Even more surprising is that while the CM and other heads of services such as the Mumbai police have a Twitter account, the municipal commissioner is the only head who does not even have an active twitter handle."

In another letter, activist GR Vora said that the authorities were in the know of what was happening at Kamala Mills and still failed to take any action against the errant people. Vora wrote that senior officials knew what had happened and should have done something about it.

Some even wrote a letter to the senior officers attaching news items of corruption in the municipal corporation, which alleged specific corruption by officers of the BMC which stated that illegality was rampant right under their nose.
