The Bombay High court has asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to remove all illegal hoardings and skysigns which continue to remain even after expiry of their lease period before polling day.
A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Anuja Prabhudessai has asked the civic chief to act in accordance with law and also initiate criminal prosecution against the offenders. The court accordingly disposed off a public interest litigation filed by NGO Janhit Manch, highlighting the issue of illegal hoardings/political banners being put up at different places in the city.
The court had earlier also while disposing off a bunch of petitions said that every policemen and Municipal Corporation/Council official has now been held under obligation to act against illegal banners/posters, hoardings and skysigns.
The court gave various other directions which stated that legal framework and the legal provisions have remained only on paper and no law enforcing agency has effectively discharged its duty presumably because of the involvement of the political leaders/political parties/activists.
