If you are in or around Bandra on January 26, you may be in for a pleasant surprise by schoolkids there. While wishing you for a Happy Republic Day, the young members of Bandra Interschool Republic Day committee are set to distribute little flags that can be stuck onto clothing.

Unlike the past 3 years, BIRD will not celebrate the event on a grand scale, but instead, do so in their respective schools. However, the celebration won't end there.

Later, the students' enthusiasm will be visible to the public, for more than 2,50,000 flags will be stuck on people's attire by the children.

The flag hoisting ceremony will end by 8:30 am in BIRDs 40 schools. After that, all 40,000 students from classes VII – IX, along with their teachers and parents will gather at public places like hospitals, bus stops, railway stations, bazaars and petrol pumps.

Fr Jude Fernandes SJ, principal of St Stanislaus High School, Bandra, said that the enthusiasm would continue after the morning's ceremony. He added: "If more schools want to hold this activity, we are ready to print additional sticker flags for their students."

Each student from grade I to IV will given 5 cards, grade V to VI will be given 10 cards and grade VII to IX will be given 25 cards to distribute. The cards will have flags on them, which can be peeled off and distributed.
Students will approach citizens and greet them with wishes of 'Happy Republic Day', 'Proud to be an Indian' and 'May I flag you'.

While secondary students will go to public places, students from grade I to VI will be distributing their sticker flags in their societies.

Peter de Souza, convenor, BIRD, said, "Till now, there were 25 schools who were of BIRD, but the number is increasing now. Out of the 25 schools' principals, 15 have been invited to Delhi to witness the Republic Day parade."
Sister Maria, principal of St Teresa's Convent High School, Santa Cruz, a BIRD member said, "We have B.Ed, and D.Ed in our campus and those students too will participate in this initiative."
