With another case coming to light of a Maharashtra youth, Tabrez Mohammad Tambe, having joined the Islamic State (IS), Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) sources on Friday said the man who indoctrinated Tambe, identified as Ali, had flown in from Saudia Arabia and spent time with his family in Mumbra in 2015.

Based on a description provided by Tabrez’s brother, Saud Noor Mohammed Tambe, the ATS is preparing a sketch of Ali, who is believed to have travelled to Libya with Tabrez to join IS. “Ali and Tabrez worked together in Riyadh. After Tabrez returned to India, Ali had visited Tabrez’s family in Mumbra and may have stayed with them as well. The duo visited a couple of places together. We are preparing a sketch based on a description provided by Saud. According to his family, Ali was instrumental in brainwashing Tabrez and had connections in the IS,” said a senior ATS official.

“Tabrez lived in Konkan with his wife and mother. He had worked in a few Gulf countries earlier as well, where he met Ali. In January, Tabrez left for Egypt under the pretext of getting a job,” the official said. According to ATS, the family did not know that Tabrez had joined IS. He was in constant contact with his wife, mother and brother after leaving the country. “Tabrez called them recently, informing them that he had reached Libya to join IS. The family tried to deter him, but failed. His brother registered a complaint,” the official said.

The ATS is also recording statements from Tabrez’s wife, mother and friends, as well as coordinating with central intelligence agencies and the Home Ministry. “We have seized mobile phones, laptops and other gadgets and documents from the residence,”said the official. According to an official statement from the ATS, a case under sections 16, 18, 18(B), 20, 38 and 39 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) has been registered against Tabrez.
