The instances of involvement of airport insiders in smuggling syndicate continues to be a cause of concern for security agencies as one more case came to light on Wednesday.

According to officials of Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of airport customs, an airport staffer and one of his accomplices were held for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold by concealing it inside a company envelop.

Additional commissioner, AIU (airport customs), Milind Lanjewar said that an employee of Celebi Nas, a ground handling service provider at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), was held with 40 gold bars worth over Rs 1.5 crore. The accused has been identified as Rohan Suresh Surve.

The officials said that Surve received the consignment from one Kirankumar Chaudhari, who arrived from Bangkok. "Surve was supposed to return the gold to Chaudhari after coming out of the airport terminal," said Lanjewar.

In a related development, AIU has written to national carrier Air India informing about the involvement of two its crew members in smuggling gold valuing at over Rs 2crore during a domestic leg of an international route flight. In its January 22 edition, dna had reported that two crew member were held by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for misusing their privilege to help two women passengers smuggle a consignment.

AIU has stated that the airline should warn its crew against getting into such criminal activities and get them checked by custom department at the CSIA.

The intelligence and security agencies are keeping special vigilance on airport insiders as at least 14 cases of involvement of airport and airline staffers were reported in the last year.
